Jonathan Bailey talks about the impact of his sexuality throughout his career

Jonathan Bailey, 38, spoke openly about the process of coming to terms with his sexuality at the beginning of his acting career.

During a candid conversation with Elton John at the Elton John Impact Awards, the star revealed that he knew the impact this could have on his professional career, but was determined not to hide who he really was.

"I was very aware of the possibilities and limits of queer actors, what that means for audiences, and the impacts."

"So yeah, I think when I was in my early twenties, there was definitely a notion that being gay would be a hindrance."

He added: "I wouldn't stop holding my boyfriend's hand on the street, and that was something I felt strongly and instinctively."

"And of course, if that meant it could jeopardize any job opportunities, I would be willing to take that risk," he added.

The actor also said he's happy to see same-sex love stories on TV and in movies, and hopes the next generation doesn't feel like they need to hide their sexuality.

"I wonder if the next generation just needs to learn to enjoy the joy they can convey to their fans and in the stories they tell."

"And just understand that we're going to need this more than ever. Because obviously we're at a landmark moment where there's a real threat that things could go backwards."

Jonathan is among the stars honored at the Elton John Impact Awards, which recognize members and allies of the LGBTQIAPN+ community who stand out for their transformative work.

The list of honorees also includes actress Laverne Cox, singer Melissa Etheridge, tennis legend Billie Jean King, musician Orville Peck and pop star Chappell Roan.
