João Fonseca was champion both times he crossed paths with Mensik

João Fonseca will face an old acquaintance in his search for an unprecedented place in the Roland Garros semifinals. The Brazilian faces Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals of the French Grand Slam with a curious coincidence in his favor: on the two occasions the two crossed paths on the professional circuit, the week ended with a title for the Rio de Janeiro native.

The first meeting took place at the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament that brings together the best under-20 tennis players of the season. In the group stage, Fonseca beat Mensik in a balanced match and continued on his way to winning the trophy, consolidating himself as one of the sport's main promises.

The second chapter of the rivalry came at the ATP 500 in Basel, in 2025. The two were scheduled to face each other in the round of 16, but the Czech had to abandon the competition before the match because of an injury. Benefiting from the withdrawal, Fonseca advanced through the group and ended the campaign with another important title under his belt.

Now, the scenario is very different. For the first time, the two meet in a Grand Slam and in one of the most relevant moments of their careers. Both Fonseca and Mensik are competing in the quarterfinals of a Major for the first time and have the opportunity to reach an unprecedented semifinal.

The match also pits two of the most talented young men of the new generation of men's tennis face to face. At 19, Fonseca is trying to become the first Brazilian since Gustavo Kuerten to reach the semi-finals in Paris. Mensik, a year older, seeks to confirm the rise that has already led him to win a Masters 1000 and join the group of the main names on the circuit.
