João Fonseca repeats rare feat and overturns Djokovic after losing 2 sets

Brazilian João Fonseca achieved a very rare feat by beating Novak Djokovic on Friday afternoon (29). For only the seventh time in his career, the Serb took a 2-set lead to 0 and saw his opponent seek a draw in the match. But only Jürgen Melzer had managed to turn the score around.

The only case had occurred in 2010, at Roland Garros 2010, when the Austrian Jürgen Melzer achieved a historic reaction in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

João Fonseca beat Serbian Djokovic, the biggest winner of titles in men's Grand Slams, by 3 sets to 2, with partials of 4/6, 4/6, 6/3, 7/5 and 7/5.

The match lasted more than 4h53min. Fonseca repeated the script from his previous victory, against Croatian Dino Prizmic, and turned the score around after being 2-0 down in sets.

With the historic victory, Fonseca reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The Brazilian's best campaign had been the third round at Roland Garros (2025) and Wimbledon (2025).

The Brazilian now awaits the definition of his opponent to compete in the round of 16. Fonseca will face Norwegian Casper Ruud or American Tommy Paul.

Other achievements of João Fonseca

Fonseca reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Previously, the best campaigns had been the third round at Roland Garros (2025) and Wimbledon (2025).

João also became the first Brazilian to beat Djoko. Before this Friday's match, the Serb had won 11 matches against tennis players from Brazil.
