João Fonseca at home? Rio hosts duel between Brazil and Switzerland for the Davis Cup

Rio de Janeiro will host a Davis Cup clash again after more than four years. The Brazilian Tennis Confederation (CBT) confirmed this week that the Farmasi Arena, in Barra da Tijuca, will be the stage for the duel between Brazil and Switzerland, scheduled for the 18th and 19th of September.

The dispute is worth a place in the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers and will be held on an indoor hard court, a choice that represents a change in the traditional strategy of the Brazilian team, historically accustomed to playing on clay when playing at home.

The definition of the headquarters was made by CBT together with the technical committee led by captain Jaime Oncins. According to him, the decision took into account both the current characteristics of Brazilian tennis players and the structure offered by the Rio arena.

According to Oncins, the team's profile has changed in recent years and the players have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level on different surfaces. Therefore, the option for a fast, indoor court was considered the most appropriate to face the Swiss.

The choice also opens up space for a special moment in João Fonseca's career. The main name of the new generation of national tennis, the Rio native will be able to compete for the first time in a Davis Cup clash in his hometown.

Fonseca debuted in the competition in 2024, playing outside Brazil. When the national team played its last match in Brazilian territory, against China, in Florianópolis, in February 2023, the tennis player was still participating in the delegation's activities as a youth player.

In addition to the symbolism for the young athlete, the return of the Davis Cup to Rio marks the resumption of major international tennis events in the city. The last time the capital of Rio de Janeiro hosted the competition was in March 2022, when Brazil faced Germany at the Olympic Park. On that occasion, the German team was attended by the country's then number one, Alexander Zverev.

The Farmasi Arena, chosen to host this year's clash, is one of the main multipurpose spaces in the country. The venue has already hosted competitions at the 2007 Pan American Games and was also used during the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
