Javier Milei appoints Interior Minister as new chief of staff

The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced this Sunday (28) the appointment of the Minister of the Interior, Diego Santilli, as the new chief of staff.

Santilli replaces Manuel Adorni, who resigned from his position following allegations of corruption, and will assume the new role on Tuesday (30).

The change comes at a time when Milei's popularity is falling, amid accusations of corruption and growing friction within his cabinet.

Accountant and member of the center-right PRO party, founded by former president Mauricio Macri, Santilli has served as deputy head of government for the city of Buenos Aires, deputy, senator and Minister of Security for the Argentine capital.

"I will give my all so that this government continues to advance the structural reforms that Argentina has needed for decades," said Santilli, in a post on the social network X.

Adorni, the chief of staff who leaves office after submitting his resignation on Saturday (27), is being investigated for alleged illicit enrichment, among other infractions.

He has faced criticism over several personal trips he took with his family, including a first-class holiday to the Caribbean island of Aruba over the Christmas period and a private jet flight to Uruguay around Carnival time.

Adorni stated that he built his wealth before joining the government and that all his personal trips were paid for with his own resources.
