Faced with the increase in bear attacks, Japan will install more than 800 cameras in the country's mountains to monitor bear populations, the country's Ministry of the Environment reported this Thursday (2).

Since April 1, at least five people have died in bear attacks in the Tohoku region, in the north, after a record 13 deaths in 2025, according to the same source. A sixth death is being investigated.
Inhabitants of this region live in constant fear, with frequent sightings of bears in commercial spaces, parks or near schools.
Authorities will first focus on six main bear populations in Tohoku and then extend the operation to the entire country over the next four years, explained Yu Takahashi, head of the Ministry, to the AFP news agency.
"Until now, local communities carried out bear censuses in their territory, each at different periods and with their own methods. Our objective now is to obtain a more accurate census", said Takahashi.
As part of this operation, authorities placed pots with a mixture of honey and wine at various points to attract the animals and be able to photograph them.
Scientists attribute the increase in incidents to the growth of the bear population and the decrease in the number of inhabitants in rural areas.
