The match was valid for the second phase of the tournament - the so-called round of 32, played for the first time in the history of the competition due to the increase in the number of participating teams.
The Norwegians opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the first half, when Antonio Nusa received a pass from Martin Odegaard on the left of the area, cleared the middle and finished with his right foot into the top left corner of goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
The goal boosted Norway, who started to press even more and came close to extending their lead before the break, with Alexander Sorloth and Torbjorn Heggem wasting good opportunities.
Ivory Coast returned to the second half with greater intensity and sought a equalizer in the 28th minute of the final stage.
Amad Diallo played with Nicolas Pepe on the right of the area, cut to the middle and finished with his left foot into the back of the net, restoring equality on the scoreboard.
The Ivorian reaction, however, was short-lived.
In the 40th minute of the second half, Oscar Bobb played Patrick Berg on the right of the area, and the midfielder rolled the ball for Erling Haaland to complete with a left-footed goal with the goal open, putting Norway back 2-1 ahead.
In the final minutes, Ivory Coast launched an attack in search of a draw, but ran into the defenses of goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who saved a dangerous free kick from Amad Diallo in the 50th minute.
Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela ended the match with the Norwegian victory confirmed.
In terms of statistics, Ivory Coast dominated possession and outperformed their opponents in corners - 14 to 3 - and in total shots - 13 to 9 -, in addition to recording 312 successful passes compared to 424 for the Europeans.
Norway, in turn, was more efficient in the opportunities created, converting two of their four shots on target, while the Ivorians scored once in five successful attempts.
The Scandinavian team also demonstrated defensive solidity, with eight blocks and six correct interceptions, in addition to a difficult defense performed by Nyland.
Antonio Nusa received the only yellow card of the match, in the 45th minute of the first half, after a foul on Guéla Doué.
With the result, Norway advances to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Brazil, who eliminated Japan 2-1 in the previous round.
For Côte d'Ivoire, elimination ends their historic participation in the tournament - it was the first time that the Ivorian team reached the knockout stage of a World Cup.
The Elephants had finished the group stage in second place in Group E, with six points, but were unable to overcome the Norwegian obstacle in their knockout debut.
