Italian court denies extradition and authorizes release of Carla Zambelli

The Italian court denied extradition and authorized the release of former deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) in one of the cases against her in the country. The decision responds to a request from the defense, judged this Friday (22). The former deputy has been imprisoned in Italy since July 2025, after her name was included in Interpol's Red Diffusion as an international fugitive.

The decision refers to the conviction of the former deputy for invading the CNJ (National Council of Justice) system and issuing a false arrest warrant against minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).

The extradition request for Zambelli to serve his sentence in Brazil for being convicted of illegal possession of a weapon for the case in which he pointed a revolver at a man in São Paulo is still pending.

The Court of Appeal had analyzed the two cases in the same hearing and published two different decisions, both in favor of extradition.

This Friday, however, the Supreme Court of Cassation, the last instance of Italian justice, judged only the conviction relating to the CNJ case and handed down a ruling in favor of Zambelli. The same court must judge, without a date yet set, the case relating to the other case.

Carla Zambelli was arrested on July 29 last year, after her name was included in Interpol's Red Diffusion as an international fugitive. She left Brazil after being convicted.
