Publications are circulating on social media saying that the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, caused the earthquake in Venezuela. It's #FAKE.

With more than 3 million views, publications on X show videos of an intensely red sky in Caracas and La Guaira, two Venezuelan cities intensely affected by the June 24 earthquake. The records also show flashes in a night sky.
Post captions claim that these unusual patterns in the sky were evidence of HAARP being used to cause the tremors. See two examples of these statements (one in Portuguese and the other originally written in Spanish): "The lights that appear over the mountains generate the suspicion that H.A.A.R.P was used to cause the earthquakes in Venezuela. Someone is playing God and we know who they are: Spectacular resorts are coming?"; and "The sky turned red during the day of the earthquake in Venezuela. The sky is colorful before, during and after the use of HAARP."
But that's a lie. In Fact or Fake, professor Micael Cecchini, from the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of São Paulo (IAG/USP), denied the connection of the American study project: "HAARP has no capacity whatsoever to generate earthquakes, especially because it is just an electromagnetic wave, like light. Thinking that it would cause an earthquake makes no sense, just as turning on a light switch would not cause it either. It is also not capable of doing anything climate and has no effect on rain" (see more details below).
On the night of June 24, two earthquakes in sequence hit the northern region of Venezuela, where Caracas is located. The tragedy left a trail of destruction in the capital and neighboring municipalities. The earthquakes were the strongest recorded in the country in more than a century. The number of deaths exceeded 4 thousand, according to a balance released this Friday (10).
In a technical note published on its website on June 24, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) attributed the earthquake to the clash of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates: "The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that occurred on June 24, 2026, southeast of Yumare, Venezuela, were the result of a shallow strike-slip fault near the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates. The Caribbean plate moves eastward relative to South America at a rate of about 20 mm per year, and this movement is accommodated by a large dextral (rightward) strike-slip fault system that runs through northern Venezuela." The official website describes that it is "a scientific endeavor that aims to study the properties and behavior of the ionosphere." In the definition of NASA (the American space agency) "the ionosphere extends approximately 80 to 640 kilometers above the Earth's surface, right on the frontier of space". "Together with the neutral upper atmosphere, the ionosphere forms the boundary between the Earth's lower atmosphere - where we live and breathe - and the vacuum of space."
Professor Micael Cecchini explains that HAARP was created to map the functioning of this electrified layer of the atmosphere that makes global transmission of radio waves possible:
"HAARP works like a radar to measure properties of the ionosphere, where the air is very rarefied and electrically active. By means of a antenna, it releases electromagnetic waves that go to the ionosphere, interact with the molecules there and return, serving to understand how solar radiation impacts, for example, the transport of radio waves that occur in this layer and what possible interferences are.
Essentially, it is as if HAARP operated analogously to a meteorological radar, which emits a microwave to interact with the rain, allowing the distance to this moisture front to be quantified."
In relation to the intense red tone recorded in the evening in the days following the earthquake, the USP specialist points out that this phenomenon is known as Rayleigh scattering and is related to the increase in dust particles in the sky:
"When we have more particles in the atmosphere, we can have a red or even pinkish sunset, as it increases the deviation of light that reaches the atmosphere from the Sun. We probably had a lot of dust raised due to the earthquakes and destruction. In this sense, I think it is possible for this relationship to exist."
Cecchini warns that the record of the red sky was not caused by the earthquake, nor is it indicative of a new tremor:
"It is important to say that the red sky does not occur directly because of the earthquake. It's an indirect relationship: the earthquake ends up raising a lot of dust, which increases the scattering of red light and everything looks like it does in the videos. It also does not indicate whether there will be another earthquake, as I saw someone suggesting on the networks."
The flashes recorded shortly after the earthquakes could, according to the professor, be related to the friction of tectonic plates: "It is an unusual phenomenon, but it can occur during earthquakes. The friction of tectonic plates can generate momentary electrification of the air. This electrical charge, in turn, can heat chemical compounds in the atmosphere, generating lights of different colors."
