A publication is circulating on the networks saying that the Mexico national team has launched a new shirt inspired by the character Chaves to play in the 2026 World Cup. It's #FAKE. Facebook and TikTok. They show an image of a supposed new official uniform for the Mexican football team. The shirt has horizontal stripes in beige, black and white, as well as an orange diagonal stripe. It would be a reference to the character Chaves, played by Roberto Bolaños (1929-2014) in the series of the same name.
See two examples of captions that accompany the material: "The Mexico team will be the favorites of this World Cup with this new uniform"; and "This uniform for the Mexican team for the World Cup, inspired by Chaves".
That's not true. The uniform inspired by Chaves was created by a fan in 2024. The official versions of the local team were presented between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 - none of them resemble the character's outfits (read more below).
The fake content spread a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico itself.
⚠️ Why is it #FAKE?
Fato ou Fake showed the shirt supposedly inspired by Chaves to the press office of Adidas, manufacturer of the Mexican team's uniform. Read the answer:
"It's false. The main shirts of the teams sponsored by Adidas, such as Mexico, were launched on November 5, 2025. The Mexican team's main shirt is green, with dark green details. The second shirt was launched on March 20, 2026. It is white, with black and red details. Mexico even had a third shirt, black, which was launched, now, on May 11."
To find the origin of the material, Fato ou Fake did a reverse search for the image on Google Lens. This research allows you to check whether content had previously been published on the internet - and in what context.
The result led to a post on March 15th this year on Instagram by the uniform's author. In the caption, in Spanish, he explained that he produced the piece long before the official launch of the official shirts: "In 2024, I created this concept of the Mexican team, taking inspiration from the series 'Chaves'. A few weeks ago, however, it went viral again in several sports outlets in Brazil, with a very positive reception. It is worth clarifying that the objective of the design is to transform a character into a sports piece, prioritizing symbolism over modern 'aesthetic standards'."
