What does the video look like?
Shared since June 27 on Instagram, Threads, TikTok and Facebook, the content displays a huge lava fountain surrounded by smoke and soot in a rock formation. The recording, recorded from a high point, shows several people observing the phenomenon from a distance.
See an example caption: "A fountain of lava about 300 meters high erupts at the Kīlauea volcano, in Hawaii. The Earth stars in one of the most dazzling and terrifying spectacles that nature is capable of creating.".
In the comments section, users wrote that the scene was "crazy, but beautiful at the same time" and "absolutely breathtaking breathless, but terrifying." However, some people also questioned whether the record was true or a production of artificial intelligence (AI).
✅ Why is it #FACT?
On June 27, 2026, an eruption occurred in the Halema'uma'u crater on the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii. The event produced a fountain of lava that reached 300 meters high at its peak and lasted about 7 hours, according to the Hawaii Volcanological Observatory, an agency of the United States Geological Survey.
The recording was shared by Nick Petelos, a visual artist who records eruptions on Kīlauea. On his social networks, he regularly publishes photos and videos of the volcano."Eruption of the summit of the kīlauea volcano, episode 50. June 27, 2026", he wrote in the caption of the viral post.

To find the origin of the content, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool and fragmented the material into several frames (static images). Then, he selected one of these "photos" and did a reverse search on Google Lens.
This research serves to verify whether the content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources - and in what context. The oldest result was the artist's June 28 Instagram post.
Considered one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, Kīlauea has been experiencing intermittent eruptions since December 23, 2024 and remains under constant monitoring. In June of this year, Kīlauea recorded intense volcanic activity two more times.
Fato ou Fake consulted the Hawaii agency, which stated, via email: "These appear to be real video images of the 50th episode of lava fountains at the summit of Kīlauea, which occurred for about 7 hours on June 27, 2026."
The observatory published several videos and images from the episode very similar to the content that went viral on social media (see below).
Lava source reaches 300 meters in Hawaiian volcano
Fato ou Fake also showed the video to geologist Adriana Alves, professor at the Institute of Geosciences at the University of São Paulo (IGc-USP). "The video is perfect. You can see that it is windy, you can see that even the smoke curves to the left in the video", he points out.
According to Alves, the phenomenon shown in the video is rarer in Hawaii due to a local characteristic - the low viscosity of the magma. This property causes the magma to lose its gases before reaching the surface.
"Volcanic activity in Hawaii generally produces that little river of lava, which flows at a very low speed. Occasionally, the gases are unable to escape [the magma] and expand very quickly and close to the surface." It is precisely in these less common cases that the lava source occurs.
To illustrate, the geologist compared the event with a bottle of soda: "It's like shaking a Coca-Cola, the appearance of the closed bottle doesn't change much, what changes is the speed at which you open the cap."
In this analogy, soda is like magma at high pressure, which has dissolved gases. If the bottle cap is opened more slowly, the gases escape little by little.
If it is opened quickly, there will be a sudden drop in pressure and the gas will quickly escape from the refrigerant (or magma), producing bubbles. This transition produces an explosive effect, seen both in the drink and in the lava source itself.
"If you have dissolved gas in the magma reaching the surface, it will produce a lava source. So it depends on this turning point, where the magma can no longer carry the gases in dissolved form", he explains.
