"It hurts", says mother of young woman killed after being thrown into a rope jump without a rope
The mother of young Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, aged 21, who died on Saturday (13), in Limeira, in the interior of São Paulo, after being thrown from a bridge without a protective rope, spoke out on social media after her daughter's death. In a post on Instagram this Sunday (14), Valdenia Rodrigues wrote: "How painful your departure is."
Maria Eduarda practiced the extreme sport known as rope jumping, similar to bungee jumping, in which a person jumps while attached to a rope. The case occurred on the Skeleton Bridge trail.
"My beloved daughter, just today I wanted to hug you more than a thousand times. How your departure hurts me. I love you eternally, my princess. And thank you so much for being part of my life during these 21 years. What an honor it was to hear you call me mother. God, thank you for this privilege", he wrote on social media.
The rope, which was supposed to be attached to Maria Eduarda's body, was forgotten on the floor. In a video circulating on social media, it is possible to see the moment of the fall. The victim is carried, face down, by two instructors while a third observes. Just before the young woman is launched, someone who doesn't appear in the images asks: "It's the rope, right?"
After Maria Eduarda is thrown from the bridge, the person recording the video shouts: "Guys, the rope!". The witness films the protective equipment that was left on the ground.
In bungee jumping, the rope must be attached to the person's feet and produces a "yo-yo effect". In rope jumping, the person is tied with ropes around the waist and chest, remaining "sitting" during the jump.
Maria Eduarda even published a sequence of stories on Saturday morning, before the jump, in which she showed identification bracelets and the location of the activity. "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?", he wrote jokingly.
The investigation of the case
Six people were taken to the Limeira Police District to provide clarification, three of which remained detained. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the detainees are 27, 32 and 42 years old and were arrested in the act for homicide with possible intent, when there is no direct intention to kill, but the risk is assumed.
This Sunday, the 14th, the Court converted the arrest of the three detained in the act into preventive. Preventive detention has no term and can be maintained as long as the judicial authorities deem necessary.
According to the SSP, investigations continue to determine the circumstances and possible responsibilities.
