Israel is experiencing a scenario of isolation and internal pressure, says Danny Zahreddine
Israel faces a scenario of increasing international isolation and internal political complexity, according to an analysis by Middle East expert Danny Zahreddine. In an interview with WW Especial, he assessed that the current situation in the country is more serious than in previous moments of tension in the region.
To contextualize the moment Israel is experiencing, Zahreddine turned to history. He highlighted that after the Six-Day War, Israel experienced a period of great political strength: in 1969, the Labor Party alone won 57 seats in the Knesset and, adding the allies, reached 102 seats in a parliament of 120. "It's a very impressive thing," said the expert.
However, the scenario was reversed after the Yom Kippur War. According to Zahreddine, victory in the 1973 elections was achieved with a small margin, the coalition formed was fragile and the resulting government lasted less than a month. The expert drew a direct parallel between this historical moment and Benjamin Netanyahu's current situation.
Zahreddine pointed out that the peak of the Israeli position came in 2025, when, according to him, "the cornerstone that supported the axis of resistance collapsed" and the so-called Twelve-Day War further weakened the connections between Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Still, the expert highlighted that these actors "will continue".
In the external field, the analyst highlighted that the war in Gaza isolated Israel from Europe and made the country "much less democratic and liberal". At the domestic level, Zahreddine assessed that Netanyahu is worried that the political outcome experienced by Golda Meir after Yom Kippur could be repeated with him in the elections scheduled for October 2026. "Israel's condition is one of isolation and from a political point of view it is very complex for the current prime minister," he concluded.
