Israel carries out deadly attacks in Lebanon despite ceasefire, media says

Israeli attacks hit several cities in southern Lebanon on Saturday morning (20), killing at least five people, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported, despite Israel and Hezbollah renewing their ceasefire on Friday (19).

Attacks and artillery fire were reported across the Nabatieh district, destroying homes and residential buildings, according to NNA.

Three people died after Israeli jets struck the city of Arab Salim at around 6:30 am local time, NNA reported. One person died in an attack in the city of Deir al-Zahrani and another died when a drone hit a motorcycle in the city of al-Dweir at around 7:30 am, the news agency reported.

A source told CNN that Israel and Hezbollah's new ceasefire was expected to begin as early as Friday at 4pm local time.

The latest truce agreement was reached after the two sides exchanged deadly attacks on Friday, putting negotiations to reach a final peace deal between the United States and Iran at risk.

The Israeli military killed at least 47 people in Lebanon on Friday, according to the Lebanese health ministry, the second deadliest day since hostilities began between Israel and Hezbollah in early March.

Israel and Lebanon are expected to participate in another round of diplomatic meetings in Washington next week.
