Israel attacks Lebanon a day after agreeing to withdraw troops from the region

The Israeli armed forces carried out a drone attack in southern Lebanon this Saturday (27), one day after agreeing to withdraw some troops from the region, which highlights the fragility of the ceasefire between the two countries.

An IDF (Israel Defense Forces) officer told CNN that the attack was aimed at eliminating a threat to his troops.

The action highlights the challenges that remain in securing a lasting peace deal in Lebanon, where the IDF is waging an ongoing war against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, further complicating peace talks between Washington and Tehran.

Under a US-brokered deal, Israel agreed to withdraw troops from areas north and south of the Litani River, transferring control of those locations to the Lebanese armed forces.

Both Lebanon and Israel presented the agreement as a first step, with both claiming victory for their respective countries.

Hezbollah, in turn, rejected the agreement. In a long statement released this Saturday, the group's secretary-general, Naim Qassem, said the agreement represented "a waste of Lebanon's sovereignty."
