Israel and Lebanon reach ceasefire agreement, says Trump administration

Israel attacks southern Lebanon again
Israel and Lebanon agreed this Wednesday (3) to a ceasefire, according to a statement from the US State Department.
"Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a ceasefire", which will be conditioned on "the total cessation of Hezbollah fire and the withdrawal of all Hezbollah members from the area south of the Litani River", states the statement signed by the three parties involved in the negotiations.
The note was released two days after conversations between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah.
On Monday (1st), Trump had guaranteed a ceasefire and said he would prevent the advance of Israeli troops to Beirut, as well as attacks on the suburbs of the capital considered strongholds of the extremist group.

According to the American press, Trump adopted a disapproving tone in his conversation with Netanyahu. This Wednesday, the Republican admitted to having called the prime minister "crazy" on Monday.
Israel's attacks on Lebanese territory were constantly criticized by Iran. Tehran even declared that it would not sign a peace agreement to end the war with the USA if Israel continued operations in the neighboring country.
Iran is an ally of Hezbollah, while Washington supports Israel.
In March, after Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel, forces Israelis invaded the south of the country and militarily occupied a strip of around 10 km. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese have fled their homes due to the conflict.

Lebanon under attack
On Saturday, Israel had captured Lebanon's historic Beaufort castle, built at the time of the Crusades, in the troops' deepest incursion into the country in 26 years. The following day, airstrikes took place in the suburbs of Beirut for the first time since April.
Netanyahu, in turn, said that, in his conversation with Trump, he said he would return to attacking targets in Beirut if Hezbollah did not cease its attacks.
He also said that the country's armed forces would continue to function "normally" in southern Lebanon - a strip of about 10 km in the south of the country has remained occupied by Israeli troops since March.

In his weekly press conference, Iranian diplomacy spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei commented on the expansion of Israeli operations in Lebanese territory and said that the end of the attacks is essential for peace negotiations:
"We insist that a ceasefire in Lebanon is an essential condition for any agreement aimed at ending the war".

On the social network with the United States that intends to put a lasting end to the war in the Middle East, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"No negotiations have taken place on the details of the nuclear dossier. At this stage, our priority is to end the war," said Baghaei, after American President Donald Trump declared that he had obtained guarantees from Iran that it will not develop nuclear weapons.
