Iran will benefit if it meets terms of agreement with the US, Vance tells CNN

United States Vice President JD Vance told CNN on Monday (15) that the interim agreement with Iran establishes a framework in which Iranians receive benefits by fulfilling their obligations.

Vance made the explanation after being questioned by Jake Tapper, CNN anchor, about the terms of the document, which did not explicitly say that the Iranian regime must end the ballistic missile program and stop financing groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, for example.

"The memo (...) is about a page and a half long, so it's a very general document, but this was part of the conversations we had with the Iranians on various issues," commented the vice president.

"We will have to resolve these details during the technical negotiations phase, but what the memorandum does is establish a framework in which the Iranians receive benefits from fulfilling their obligations," he added.

At another point in the interview with CNN, he pointed out that the Iranians "know" that the US "does not want" them to finance terrorist organizations and to establish a verifiable long-term commitment not to build or acquire a nuclear weapon.

"We have this in the agreement, Jake, but it is structured in such a way that we will have to link commitments to concrete deliverables, which will then be rewarded with economic benefits for the Iranian people. That's how we structure it," he highlighted.

JD Vance also said again that the Iranian nuclear program was "completely destroyed", commenting that the stockpile of enriched uranium is buried.

Furthermore, he claimed that, if they try to rebuild the program, they will not have the necessary financial resources, which, according to Vance, would be in the billions of dollars.

"On the other hand, if they are willing to meet verifiable targets and give us confidence that they will not rebuild the program, we will completely transform our relationship with Iran and Iran's relationship with the Middle East in general," he highlighted..

"Either way, the United States wins. In any scenario, we guarantee that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, but we prefer that they choose the path of greater economic cooperation and that they behave like a normal country and be treated as such", he concluded.
