US and Iran return to exchange attacks amid ceasefire
Iran launched missile and drone attacks against US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain. The action is the country's response to US bombings earlier in the evening, when President Donald Trump's government used drones, bombings and carried out actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the navy and air force carried out joint operations in response to the American attacks.
"Violating the ceasefire is contrary to Clause 1 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and will result in the complete paralysis of all diplomatic processes," the Guard said in a statement, according to Press TV.
Earlier, Iran launched a drone attack against Bahrain, while a ship was also targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, in a possible response by Tehran to aerial bombardments carried out by the United States during the night.
The attacks in the Persian Gulf increase the risk of a new escalation out of control, even after a provisional agreement between Iran and the United States to try to advance a final understanding for end the conflict.
According to The New York Times, Bahrain reported that warning sirens sounded and asked its citizens to move to safe locations.
In a statement, the Kuwaiti Army said it was responding to "hostile threats from missiles and drones." The Army stated that the sound of explosions heard corresponded to air defense systems intercepting approaching projectiles, but did not specify the origin of the attacks.
