Iran executes man accused of being an Israeli spy in the country

Iran has executed a man for alleged espionage and intelligence cooperation with Israel, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday (26).

According to state news agency Tasnim Gholamreza Khani Shekarab was executed after Iran's Supreme Court upheld his death sentence for espionage and intelligence cooperation with the Israeli government, following due legal process.

The NGO Iran Human Rights reported that Shekarab was hanged in an unspecified location on Tuesday. He was accused of acting as an overseas operational liaison to create a domestic sabotage network across several provinces responsible for arson, acid attacks and the dissemination of propaganda.

In addition, authorities alleged that Shekarab organized a plan to manufacture and smuggle explosive devices into Tehran with the aim of disrupting public infrastructure, and that he himself carried out surveillance to set the stage for the assassination of a Jewish rabbi in a neighboring country.

Shekarab was arrested on September 24, 2025 and accused of "collaboration with the Zionist regime and specifically with the Mossad intelligence agency."

According to the Fars News agency, the case was attributed to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Intelligence Organization and "as the main accused was based abroad as an operational link, he was intercepted and lured back to the country through a complex counterintelligence operation based on deception. Simultaneously, the remaining members of the network were arrested in a coordinated operation in several provinces."

According to Iran Human Rights, at least twelve people were executed on espionage charges in 2026. Ten were accused of spying for Israel and the United States, and two Iraqi citizens were accused of spying for an unidentified Arab country.
