Iran accuses US of violating clause in agreement on nuclear program

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of violating a clause on Tehran's nuclear program that is in the Memorandum of Understanding between the parties.

"Iran has so far kept its word, unlike the US Treasury Secretary, who is violating paragraph 9 of the MoU," he wrote in a post on the social network X late Friday night (10).

The ninth paragraph of the MoU states that, pending the final agreement, Iran "will maintain the status quo of its nuclear program" and that the US "will not impose new sanctions or send additional forces to the region."

On Friday, the Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Tehran following Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the week.

Araghchi wrote that the "violation adds to other violations and mistakes by the United States," adding: "There can only be mutual compliance."

The sanctions are the latest in a series of retaliatory measures by the US government for these attacks. They come at a time when the government seeks to intensify pressure on the regime as diplomatic efforts lose momentum.

Earlier this week, the US carried out days of bombings against Iranian targets and revoked an exemption that allowed Iran to sell its oil without being sanctioned.

On Friday, President Donald Trump again declared that the MoU is "closed" but said negotiations with Tehran would continue.
