Investing is not gambling: what to know before investing your money

Investing has always been sold to Brazilians as a quick way to multiply money. But this logic distorts the true role of the investor and contributes to impulsive decisions, inappropriate products and even debt.

In Brazil, investors are still treated more as consumers of financial products than as financiers of the country's economy.

The market doesn't stop and money doesn't wait. Subscribe to the Resenha do Dinheiro newsletter and stay up to date with everything that matters to your pocket. Just click here.

For the presenter of Resenha do Dinheiro, Marilia Fontes, the problem begins with the way banks and brokers present investments to clients.

According to her, when the investor arrives at a financial institution with assets accumulated over the years, they normally receive an offer focused on products with high rates and greater profitability for the institutions.

Marilia argues that financial education is the main instrument to change this scenario.

"Today, investors are still seen much more as consumers of financial products, and only financial education can change this scenario", he analyzes.

Thiago Godoy, financial educator, reinforces that the focus should not only be on profitability, but on adapting products to each person's reality.

"There is no financial product that is universally good. The best investment is the one that makes sense for each person's goals and reality. Focusing only on profitability can be a trap. The most important thing is the strategy", explains Godoy.

The discussion about financial education also involves the increasing complexity of products available on the market.

"As the Brazilian population becomes more financially educated, products become more complex. This is what happens in the most developed economies. This education continues forever", says Bernardo Pascowitch, founder and CEO of Yubb.

In addition, Pascowitch warns about the culture of short-termism and the constant search for quick gains.

"People need to understand that investments are not bets, they are not tools for getting rich quick, overnight. Investing should be something 'boring'. The idea of investing is not adrenaline, it is freedom. It is building wealth over time", he adds.
