Instagram starts displaying real-time location of users in Brazil and raises concern
Repdoução/Instagram
Instagram started to release the "Instagram Map" in Brazil, a feature that allows sharing the user's location with their followers. The new feature generated concern on social media because it shows the exact point where a person is.
On the tool's presentation screen, Instagram states that "you are not sharing your location unless you activate this option". The company also informs that "your followers can see your content in the locations you mark".
Access to the resource is within the direct messaging (DM) area. A globe icon identified as "Map" opens a view in which it is possible to see the location associated with publications and stories shared by users.

The function had already generated controversy before its official launch. In 2025, some users got early access to the feature and reported concerns about location sharing.
Now, after the tool's wider release, some people say it no longer appears on their profiles. g1 sought out Meta, owner of Instagram, to clarify the case and is awaiting feedback.
Negative repercussions
On social media, users criticized Instagram's new functionality and warned of possible risks related to location sharing.
"Instagram giving weapons to stalkers", wrote one person on 2026 and Instagram thought it was a good idea to launch a MAP where you can see where people are!!!!", said a third user.
"Don't activate location on the Instagram map, especially if you're a woman. This is one of the biggest craziness I've ever seen", wrote another.
