Inpe: Amazon has lowest level of deforestation in the 1st half of ten years
Deforestation alerts in the Amazon registered the lowest level for the first half of the year in ten years, according to a survey released by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research) this Friday (10). The drop was 35% compared to the same period last year.
According to Deter (Real-Time Deforestation Detection System), alerts totaled 297.26 km² in June 2026, compared to 457.61 km² registered in the same month of the previous year.
In the accumulated monitoring calendar, 2,485.90 km² of areas were recorded under deforestation alert in the period from August 2025 to June 2026. In the same period of the previous cycle, between August 2024 and June 2025, the total was 3,959.98 km², which represents a drop of 37.2%.

Deter is responsible for issuing daily warnings of suppression, deforestation and degradation of native vegetation, carried out based on images from WFI sensors, on board the CBERS-04, CBERS-04A and Amazônia-1 satellites.
According to the agency, the warnings do not constitute a monthly deforestation rate, but rather a trend in deforestation behavior during the monitored period.
As for the data released this Friday, they cover the period from August 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026 - the first eleven months of the 2025/2026 monitoring calendar - and, separately, the month of June 2026.
Comparisons follow the methodology adopted in monthly releases: same interval as the previous calendar and averages of the historical series for each monitoring.
Cerrado also shows reduction
In the Cerrado, native vegetation suppression alerts totaled 481.53 km² in June this year, compared to the 508.69 km² observed in June 2025, a reduction of 5.3%.
In the accumulated period between August 2025 and June 2026, the biome recorded 4,689.40 km² of areas under alert, compared to 5,091 km² in the same period in the previous calendar, a drop of 7.9%.

According to Inpe, there was significant cloud cover over the Cerrado during June, a factor that may have made mapping of some areas difficult and influenced the data for the period.
