Indonesia considers "cat island" as solution for stray cats
Indonesian authorities are considering an unusual solution for the capital's growing stray cat population, which is expected to reach more than 800,000 by 2025.
The Jakarta government plans to rehome the cats on a small island north of the city.
The pilot project would take the cats to Lesser Tidung (Kecil), a small conservation island. mangrove forests neighboring the island of Greater Tidung (Besar), a much-visited tourist destination.

Authorities say this could help control overpopulation and boost tourism, but residents and experts warn of disease risks, environmental impact and long-term animal welfare concerns.
"If they are just thrown there, without the necessary care, what's the point? If no one feed them, they will suffer. And there is also the issue of diseases", criticized a resident of the island of Greater Tidung, neighboring the island where the felines would be taken.
Dwi Cahyaningtyas, who takes care of stray cats in the capital, believes that the best solution would be to neuter them.
