In the USA, Flávio participates today in a public hearing on pricing
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) participates, this Tuesday (7), in a public hearing in the United States that will discuss the possibility of imposing an extra 25% tariff on Brazilian products.
The parliamentarian and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic is expected to give a five-minute speech on the last day of debates organized by the USTR, an acronym in English for Office of the United States Trade Representative, the body that conducts the open trade investigation against Brazil.
Flávio must defend that the surcharge is not implemented and will ask both countries to seek a solution through dialogue.
In his assessment, the measure would bring losses to Brazilian exporters and consumers and, at the same time, would end up politically strengthening President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Participation in the hearing occurs after sending an 86-page document to the United States authorities. In the material, Flávio requests the suspension of the so-called tariff and asks that Pix not be included in the commercial dispute between the two countries.
According to Flávio Bolsonaro, the North American country has no interest in taking large-scale economic measures against foreign democracy in the weeks before an election.
If so, the document points out, the tariffs could be portrayed as an attempt to influence the outcome, inflaming sentiment against the US.
"Postponing implementation until after the vote prevents this characterization. This interest is indifferent to which candidate wins, including the re-election of the current president; it only concerns the timing and perception of US action and reinforces, based on foundations entirely internal to US politics, the provision that the law already allows", he claims.
Brazilian government will send observers
The Brazilian government decided, at the last minute, to send observers from the Brazilian Embassy in Washington to the public hearing at the USTR.
The order is only for representatives of the embassy to follow, as observers, the session - but without any speech or interference.
For members of Palácio do Planalto, the presence of diplomats aims to allow the government to become aware of the arguments presented during the meeting, but without changing the negotiation strategy with the American authorities.
A negotiating meeting between the USTR and the MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce) is still scheduled for this week.
Last week, minister Márcio Elias Rosa delivered to the American authorities a proposal for a way forward to resolve the six points considered priorities in the negotiations between the two countries.
The government's assessment is that talks with the United States have been conducted for about a year, without progress, due to political motivation on the part of the White House.
