At least seven people have died in France, directly or indirectly due to the heat wave, French Deputy Energy Minister Maud Bregeon said on Tuesday (26), a day after the national meteorological service recorded the hottest day in May in the country's history.

Five of the seven victims drowned in lakes, rivers or beaches, Bregeon said.

The government has ordered local authorities to take measures to protect people during sporting events, she added.

France has been recording above average temperatures since Saturday (23).

Most of Brittany, a French region, is under an orange alert issued by the meteorological service Meteo France, which predicts temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius on Tuesday afternoon (26).

The heat wave is expected to continue on Wednesday (27) and Thursday (28), Meteo France reported.
