ICE agent shoots dead Mexican driver in Texas during vehicle stop

A United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a Mexican driver during a traffic stop in Houston, in the state of Texas, this Tuesday (7), the agency reported.

The man was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. According to ICE, he was a Mexican citizen who was illegally staying in the United States and tried to escape during an immigration inspection operation.
Ronaldo Salgado, who introduced himself as the victim's son, told broadcaster Telemundo Houston that his father was looking for workers to hire when he was shot.
In a statement, ICE stated that Salgado crashed into an agency vehicle, ignored repeated orders to stop and tried to run over one of the agents. According to the agency, the government official fired in self-defense. Salgado was taken to a hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

In recent months, initial reports from American immigration agencies about similar operations have been challenged by camera footage or other evidence, in some cases presented in court.
In October, Marimar Martinez, a resident of the Chicago area, was accused of hitting agents with her car and was shot five times, but survived. The charges ended up being dropped after images indicated that the agents themselves could have caused the collision.
Until the publication of this report, neither the FBI nor the United States Department of Homeland Security, to which ICE is linked, had commented on the case.
