"I've never seen such a bizarre trial", says Jairinho's defense after conviction
Former councilor Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, Dr. Jairinho, was sentenced this Wednesday (4) to 43 years, 9 months and 20 days in prison for the death of his stepson Henry Borel, aged 4.
However, Fabiano Lopes, Jarinho's lawyer, said he had never seen such a bizarre trial in his entire life.
After the conviction, the defense gave an interview to the press and stated that during the entire 11 days of the jury there were several nullities, and therefore, "they have no doubt that the jury will be nullified".
I have never seen such a bizarre trial in my entire life. Every day, every moment, it was a nullity. A strange trial, which, for example, did not please the Public Prosecutor's Office and did not please Jairo's defense either. Clearly, the Court itself prevented Jairo's defense from doing its job, giving different treatment to Monique's defense.

In addition, the lawyer stated that "for Leniel, (Henry's father) everything will continue to be wonderful", and that his son's death always served as an electoral tool.
Conviction of Jairinho and pardon of Monique
The Sentencing Council of the II Jury Court of Rio de Janeiro found Dr. Jairinho guilty of double homicide and one of the crimes of torture attributed to him during the process.
Monique Medeiros, the child's mother, was convicted of omission in the face of the torture suffered by her son and received a sentence of 1 year and 4 months in detention, already considered served. Regarding the murder charge, the jurors downgraded the crime to manslaughter, and Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro applied a judicial pardon.

Throughout the sessions, delegates, coroners, experts, family members, nannies and the defendants themselves were heard.
During the trial, Monique accused Jairinho for the first time for her son's death. During interrogation, she stated that she believed that the former councilor was responsible for the attacks against Henry. In the final stretch of the jury, this Wednesday, Monique cried several times during the parties' arguments.
During the indictment, the Public Prosecutor's Office showed videos and images of Henry alongside his father, Leniel Borel, including records of the last images of the child in the playground of a condominium during the last weekend before his death.
Prosecutors also showed images from the building's elevator security cameras, showing Henry on Monique's lap next to Jairinho hours before the death, as well as photographs from the forensic examination carried out at the Instituto Médico-Legal.
In the final phase of the defense, Monique's lawyers showed videos of the child with her mother and argued that she had been a victim of gender-based violence and an abusive relationship.
The former councilor, in turn, denied the accusations. After debates between the prosecution and defense, the sentencing council met to vote on the questions. The decision ended with the conviction of the two defendants for the death of Henry Borel.
