Hugo supports readjustment of the MEI and signals approval in the Chamber

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated this Tuesday (26), in an interview with CNN Brasil, that he took to President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) the proposal for an adjustment in the revenue ceiling for MEIs (Individual Microentrepreneurs).

"But I, personally, defend that this value be adjusted. This is the Chamber's desire, and I have been demanding for a long time for this project to be voted on. We know that there is a fiscal impact, so there is a conversation with the government so that what the Chamber approves is, in fact, something that can be supported by public accounts", explained Hugo.

Today, a MEI can have an annual turnover of up to R$81,000 and is entitled to hire, at most, one employee with a formal contract, who receives the minimum wage for the category or the minimum wage.

In principle, the Legislative proposal increases the MEI revenue limit to R$130,000 and now allows the hiring of up to two employees, as long as they receive a minimum wage or the minimum wage for the professional category.

According to the president of Casa Baixa, a study is underway to define the final value of the adjustment, and conversations with the federal government team will resume in the coming days.

"President Lula was very sensitive to this and ordered the Minister of Planning, Bruno Moretti, to carry out the study, together with the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, so that a proposal can be presented and we can promote a change in the current MEIs law", he said.

"This value has been out of date for many years, and this correction allows these workers, who work for these companies, to be able, with this increase in revenue, to have this update and the condition to work within the law, without tax evasion or makeup of revenue", pointed out Hugo.

The president of the Chamber also defended that, given the proposal to end the 6×1 scale, there is a discussion to make the number of employees allowed for the micro-entrepreneur category more flexible.
