How the new entry system into the European Union works
Border control in the European Union has changed for good. The block has a new entry system. From this Friday (10), there will no longer be a stamp in your passport, everything will be digital.
When disembarking on European soil, the traveler will have to scan their passport at a self-service totem and provide biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial image, and only then pass through immigration agents. In other words, be prepared for queues and delays.
"The time that will be spent now will end up being positive, because, in the long term, it will accelerate and make our entire ability to travel safer", says Anita Mendiratta, from the World Tourism Organization.
Accelerate because the data is recorded for a few years in the system. It is safer because it guarantees that the person entering the block corresponds to the document presented.
The new system applies to people from outside the European Union when entering any of the 29 countries in the Schengen Area, with the exception of Ireland and Cyprus.
Implementation began gradually in October 2025. At the time, it caused many hours of waiting at some airports, such as Lisbon.
It is important to remember that this new system is not ETIAS, the electronic travel authorization, which should only be implemented at the end of 2026.
