When talking about the Madchester movement, names like Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets tend to dominate the conversation. However, there is a band whose influence was decisive in the formation of that musical scene and which does not always receive due recognition: The Fall. Led by the eccentric and brilliant Mark E. Smith, The Fall emerged from Manchester in the late 1970s and quickly built a reputation based on their unique take on post-punk. The band mixed hypnotic repetition, surreal lyrics, an independent attitude and a sound that ignored commercial trends. Although they never achieved the same popular success as some of their contemporaries, the group became a reference for countless musicians who would later help build the Madchester phenomenon during the 1980s and early 1990s. The Madchester movement combined alternative rock, psychedelia, electronic music and rave culture. Many of the characteristics that defined this style could already be found, albeit in a more raw and experimental way, in The Fall's work. Mark E. Smith has also become a legendary figure within British music for his anti-commercial stance and his insistence on following only his own artistic vision. This independence inspired a whole generation of Manchester musicians who sought to create something genuinely new. Several members of bands from the Madchester scene have already recognized the importance of The Fall in their musical formations. The group's influence can be seen in the mix of irreverence, sound experimentation and challenging attitude that marked that generation. Today, looking back, many critics consider that Madchester may not have existed in the same way without the pioneering work carried out by Mark E. Smith and his bandmates.
