How many points does Brazil need to score to qualify?
The Brazilian team enters the field this Friday (19), against Haiti, under pressure not only due to their performance below expectations in their debut against Morocco, but also by the need to gain points to advance to the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup.
With the 1-1 draw in the first match, Brazil only has one point in Group C and no longer has the possibility of guaranteeing a place in the second round. Even a victory over Haiti would leave the definition for the final match of the group, against Scotland.
Under the new format of the World Cup, the top two placed teams from each of the 12 groups will advance, in addition to the eight best third-placed teams. This expands the classification possibilities, but also makes the dispute over tiebreaker criteria even more important.
Projections from Opta Analyst's supercomputer help to understand the scenario. According to 100,000 simulations carried out by the company, teams that finish the group stage with five or six points advance in 100% of cases. With four points, classification occurs in 99.81% of simulations.
From there, the odds decrease. Three points were enough to advance in 66.77% of the scenarios analyzed, while two points guaranteed a place in just 4.66% of the simulations. With just one point, classification occurred in only 0.03% of cases.
In practice, this means that a victory over Haiti would already put Brazil in a very comfortable situation. The team would reach four points and would only depend on a positive result or even a favorable combination in the last round to confirm their place.
On the other hand, a new draw would take the team to two points and considerably increase the pressure for the clash against the Scots. A defeat would leave Brazil with just one point and close to early elimination, a scenario that would force the team to win in the final round and still hope for parallel results.
Simulations indicate that three points are the so-called "magic number" of this World Cup. In a tournament with 48 teams and eight places allocated to the best third-placed teams, reaching this mark with a positive goal difference is usually enough to move forward. Still, the safest path to the national team is to gain at least four points and avoid depending on the tiebreaker criteria.
For this reason, in addition to the performance on the field, the duel against Haiti gained extra weight for Carlo Ancelotti's men. A victory may not mathematically guarantee classification, but it will bring Brazil very close to the next stage.
