Honda Accord celebrates 50 years and accumulates more than 15 million units

The Honda Accord turns 50 now in 2026. The sedan is the best-selling passenger car in the United States over the last five decades.

Launched in June 1976, the model is expected to surpass the mark of 15 million units sold in the American market, reinforcing a trajectory that helped transform the Japanese manufacturer's presence in the country.

The sedan also has a history linked to North American industry. Since 1982, when Honda began production of the Accord in Marysville, Ohio, more than 13 million units have been manufactured in the United States.

The model was the first vehicle from a Japanese automaker produced on American soil and, years later, it also became the first car manufactured in the USA by a Japanese brand to be exported to other markets.

Initially launched as a three-door hatchback, the Accord evolved over 11 generations until it reached its current form. The Accord currently represents about a quarter of sales in the midsize sedan segment in the United States.

In the Land of Uncle Sam, the 2026 line is offered in six versions, with options equipped with a 1.5 turbo engine and also hybrid sets. In Brazil, however, it is sold in a single version.

The Brazilian reality, however, is quite different from the American one. While in the United States the Accord became a sales phenomenon and even surpassed models from local automakers, in Brazil it has always occupied a niche position.

The high price, the tax burden on imported vehicles and, more recently, the consumer migration to SUVs have limited the sedan's reach in the national market. To give you an idea, the model sold only 19 units during 2026.
