Head of USTR said he wants to continue dialogue on tariffs, says Vieira

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, said this Thursday (4) that he heard from the head of the USTR (Office of the White House Trade Representative), Jamieson Greer, that the American government is willing to "continue dialogue" with Brazil about the application of tariffs on Brazilian products.

"He approached me and we talked. He said he was having great conversations with Brazil. I said it was in our interest to have conversations, especially after the announcement of the results of the investigation reports into Section 301 [of the 1974 Trade Act]," he said.

As anticipated by CNN, the meeting took place in Paris, during a meeting of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), one day after the release of the USTR report that suggests the adoption of a 25% tariff on Brazil.

Another report recommends tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on a group of 60 US trading partners for tolerance of "forced labor" - Brazil is on the list.

According to the Brazilian chancellor, when these American tax issues began to arise, Brazil was soon willing to negotiate. "We have a long history of conversations, of bilateral meetings. We have always been willing to talk, not only in the commercial area, but in other areas as well, such as combating organized crime."

Such topics were also raised by President Lula Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the last meetings with American President Donald Trump.
