Haddad criticizes the privatization of Sabesp and talks about reviewing the contract

The former Minister of Finance and pre-candidate for the governor of São Paulo by the PT, Fernando Haddad, criticized the privatization of Sabesp and stated that, if elected, he will review the contract. The statement was made this Thursday (21) after an event at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo).

"I believe that this type of stance from the state government is bad, because the privatization experience is not working," he stated. "This is another problem, it has to do with the contract that was signed and I will have to investigate the consumer protection clauses", explained Haddad.

According to the former minister, Sabesp surpasses Enel's own complaints in Procon. "This drama that is being experienced by families will need to be faced. [...] We don't want Sabesp to become the Enel of water", said the pre-candidate.

Sabesp was privatized in 2024 for R$14.7 billion, in an operation that transformed the company into a corporation whose objective is to anticipate the universalization of sanitation in the state by 2029.

At the time, the PT (Workers' Party) stated that the law that authorized privatization and several acts that served as the basis for advancing the process violated principles such as equality, efficiency and morality.

"By not disclosing the minimum value and accepting the price offered, claiming it to be higher than this minimum, the state government unequivocally favored the only competitor in the dispute to be a reference shareholder and command the management of Sabesp", claimed the party at the time.
