Group urges US diplomats to leave countries amid Ebola outbreak

AFSA (American Foreign Service Association), which represents US diplomats, asked this Wednesday (27) that American foreign service employees in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan be allowed to leave the countries due to the Ebola outbreak.

AFSA's statement specifically mentioned the administration's plan to treat Americans with Ebola at a facility in Kenya rather than bringing them to the U.S., which AFSA described as "a drastic change from how all previous administrations have handled Ebola exposure."

"Foreign Service officers are there because the U.S. government sent them," AFSA said.

"They are entitled to the same standard of care that has always been applied, including the right to return home," he added.

A State Department official said they are "always mindful of the safety of our personnel at our posts, so this is an ongoing assessment."

"To date, we have not reduced or adjusted our stance beyond what I announced, which was the suspension of visa processing. This is an issue we regularly evaluate to see if we need to make adjustments," they said.
