The Government of São Paulo selected 214 municipalities to participate in a program to implement solar energy plants in public buildings. The initiative, coordinated by the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, foresees an initial investment of R$5 million from Fecop (State Fund for Pollution Prevention and Control) and seeks to reduce city hall spending on electricity, in addition to encouraging the energy transition.

In this first stage, the classified municipalities will be called upon to present documentation according to budget availability. The projects may receive resources to install plants with a capacity of up to 75 kWp, enough to supply around 50 homes. Among the best placed municipalities are Taiaçu, Pongaí and Salmourão, and the São José do Rio Preto region has the largest number of classified cities.

According to the secretariat, the savings generated from the reduction in energy bills could be directed to other areas of public administration. The complete list of classified municipalities was published in the Official State Gazette.
