Government of Rio will use resources recovered from Lava Jato to buy rifles

The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro will allocate R$70 million recovered through plea bargain agreements and amounts returned in Operation Lava Jato agreements for the purchase of 10,610 rifles for the security forces. Of the total weapons, 8,610 will be allocated to the Military Police, 1,310 to the Civil Police and 690 to the Criminal Police.

The Public Security Secretariat adhered to the purchase minutes from Senasp (National Public Security Secretariat), for the purchase of 556 caliber rifles from the American company Sig Sauer Inc. The contracted company has six months to deliver. The average value of each unit was R$5,304.53.

According to the Secretary of Public Security, Victor dos Santos, other resources that are recovered throughout this year will also be applied to strengthening the security of agents. In addition to rifles, the government intends to acquire ballistic vests and armored vehicles.

According to the State Attorney General's Office, the nucleus responsible for asset recovery has already managed to recover R$673 million in actions filed with the Federal Court.
