Gorillaz: what the band's current show is like at Primavera Sound São Paulo

Gorillaz is a virtual band created by vocalist and leader of Blur, Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett.

Gorillaz is the headliner of Primavera Sound São Paulo, which will take place in December 2026. It is the only group that has or will go through all the franchises of the Spanish festival this year: it performed in Barcelona, Porto, and will go on to São Paulo and Buenos Aires.

g1 attended the group's show at the Primavera Sound Barcelona festival, on June 6th. It was one of the best, if not the best of the edition, and promises to be equally excellent when it arrives here. See what the show is like:
'Cartoon' show?
Anyone who has never seen a Gorillaz show may be unsure what the format is like - after all, the band is represented by fictional and illustrated characters. In practice, the "cartoon" appears more on the screens, which are very well used, which give the impression that the characters are singing the songs.
But those who take the stage are real musicians, including the charismatic Damon Albarn (also known from the group Blur), who is more relaxed than ever.
In Barcelona, wearing military clothing, he threw himself into the crowd, complained about cell phones, played with the camera and sang much of the time into a kind of walkie-talkie.

An 'Indian' Gorillaz
This time, the band comes with an updated repertoire. The group released "The Mountain", an album influenced by Indian music and with a spiritual touch, in March. As a result, the show incorporates a robust band with sitars, flutes and a group of singers.
In Barcelona, they also brought several guests, including Little Simz, who had performed earlier at the festival, South African Moonchild Sanelly and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def). I'm curious to know who they would invite (or bring?) here.

More grandiose and meditative show
Compared to Gorillaz's last visit to Brazil (the group came in 2022 for the MITA Festival), the show is grander, more structured and... meditative, psychedelic, to match the current phase.
The group mixes new and old tracks well, bringing an oriental tone - almost like a mantra - to make the repertoire more cohesive. Hits like "Feel Good Inc" got a new arrangement, with the addition of flutes at the beginning.
And in the case of the new ones, even for those who didn't love "The Mountain", the thing works very well live, as the songs are even more engaging.
