GOL cancels flights to and from Caracas after earthquakes in Venezuela

GOL reported this Thursday (25) that it had canceled all of the company's flights to or from the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, until July 5.

This comes after two strong earthquakes hit the South American country on Wednesday (24), causing damage to the country's infrastructure and deaths.

Caracas airport was one of the structures impacted.

The airline stated in a statement that it sympathizes with "the people, families and airport community who were impacted by the earthquake".

The company informed that it will be possible to reschedule the flight date free of charge to "fly up to one year after issue". There will also be no charge for those who want to change the route. Both options are subject to availability.

It is also possible to request a refund for tickets.

Deadly earthquakes create 'horror movie' scenario
Two powerful earthquakes have caused destruction in Venezuela, leaving people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

A magnitude 7.2 tremor struck an area about 100 miles west of Caracas on Wednesday, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, according to the US Geological Survey.

Emergency teams climbed through the rubble of collapsed buildings in Caracas as night fell, as desperate family members sought help for loved ones feared trapped.

Survivors in shock were removed from the scene, some on stretchers.

"When we got down, the scene looked like something out of a horror movie," said Maria Alejandra, a resident of a neighboring building, who declined to give her last name.

"We had to climb over the rubble and everything. The building's caretaker with the baby and all the neighbors coming down. But, from that building, I only saw that family manage to get out", he added.
