Germany surpasses Brazil and becomes the team with the most goals in World Cup history
Germany's 7-1 defeat of Curaçao, this Sunday (14), did not just serve to guarantee the team's first three points in the World Cup. The result also placed the Germans at the top of one of the most important rankings in the tournament's history: the team with the most goals scored in World Cups.
With the seven goals scored in their debut in group E, Germany reached 239 goals in World Cups and surpassed Brazil, who have 238. The difference is minimal, but enough to end the Brazilian team's long lead in statistics.
The European team reached the milestone in its 21st participation in the tournament. In total, the Germans played 113 World Cup matches and averaged 2.07 goals per game. The four world titles were won in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.
Brazil, the only country present in all 23 editions of the competition, has accumulated 115 matches and averages 2.08 goals per game. The Seleção also remains the greatest champion in history, with five titles won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
The defeat of Curaçao had a curious script. The Germans repeated the score from their historic victory over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semi-final. Nmecha, Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz (twice), Musiala and Brown scored for the European team. Curaçao's goal was scored by Livano Comenencia, who made history by scoring the country's first goal in a World Cup.
In the historical ranking of goals scored in World Cups, Germany now appears in the lead, followed closely by Brazil. Argentina, France and Italy complete the top five positions.
