Germany negotiates with Jürgen Klopp after Nagelsmann's departure

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann resigned from his position this Friday (3) after the team's early elimination from the World Cup, and the German Football Federation reported that its board is in negotiations with Jürgen Klopp to replace him.

Germany's defeat to Paraguay on penalties marked their third consecutive disappointing World Cup campaign, following first-round exits in 2018 and 2022. The four-time world champions last lifted the trophy in 2014.

"My highest priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a new beginning," Nagelsmann said in a statement.

"A special thank you also to the fans. You supported us, you trusted us, you gave us energy, even in difficult times. It is really painful to know that we let you down and were unable to provide more memorable nights of football in this World Cup."

Nagelsmann, 38, who took charge in 2023 and became the youngest coach to lead a team into a World Cup knockout match in four decades, said after the defeat that he was "not someone who would say 'I'm going to resign' just because we were eliminated."

"The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023," DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said in a statement.

"He is characterized by a high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition. Julian Nagelsmann is also an extremely responsible and sincere person, whom we all value."

The board said it had begun talks with former Liverpool manager Klopp, who had shown a "general willingness" to consider the role.
