German Chancellor Merz presents Trump with national team shirt during G7

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented the President of the United States, Donald Trump, with a German football team shirt emblazoned with the number 47 during the G7 summit in France, this Tuesday (16).

The gift was delivered when the two leaders met to discuss the war in Ukraine, in the midst of the FIFA World Cup, which has the United States as one of the host countries.

In private life, it is known that Merz is a supporter of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Germany debuted in the World Cup with a 7-1 rout of Curaçao by Germany. The victory sparked a wave of enthusiasm among German fans, but captain Joshua Kimmich said on Tuesday that the team needed the next two group stage matches to know exactly where they stood.

"It was an expected victory for us, but the way it happened was very dominant," Kimmich said at a press conference. "But we saw that winning by a score like that is not something expected (in this tournament)."

In the last World Cups, Germany was eliminated in the group stage in both the 2018 and 2022 editions.
