Gender doesn't matter, says Colin Farrell about kissing "idol" Maradona

A super fan of Diego Maradona, Colin Farrell remembers the meeting -in which he kissed- the Argentine star and defines the night as one of the best of his life.

The Irish actor commented on the famous photos between the two, which went viral in 2005, a time when going viral meant being on the main covers of newspapers in the world.

"When you meet your hero and someone you idolize, as much as I idolize him, gender doesn't matter," said Farrell in an interview with After Hours, a program led by James Corden that covers the main news from the World Cup on American television.

At that time, the Irish actor was 29 years old and had been growing in the film industry after successes such as "Daredevil" (2003) and "Alexander" (2004). His personal life was also in the news due to his relationships with celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears.

Colin recalled in the interview that he was enjoying the nightlife in Buenos Aires with his father during a break from filming in Uruguay when he noticed a movement of paparazzi at the local gate where they were. That's when Maradona entered surrounded by people. The star died in 2020, aged 60.

"We ordered our first drinks and then I heard a commotion at the door. I looked... I'll never forget it. There were flashlights and flashes, and about 15 or 20 people in a semicircle. The lights went out. And I'm not kidding, a gap opened and there he was. A poetic genius, 1.65 meters tall", he said. "He was really nice, his daughter was there, we met the next night."

A few nights later, when he returned to the hotel room where he was staying, the actor received a Maradona t-shirt. But the gift wasn't for him.

"It said Amon, my father. At first, I was sad, but then I realized it was a nice gesture."
