In this latest episode of the Guia g1 podcast, certified financial planner and expert in behavioral finance Jeff Patzlaff explains that the first step, before choosing between purchase, rental or subscription, is to understand whether the car is really a need or a desire.
Introducing case by case, in the purchase, in addition to the installment, he explains that costs such as IPVA, insurance, maintenance and documentation are involved, which can add up to around 12% per year of the value of the vehicle, not counting the depreciation, which is stronger in the first two years.

When financing, he reinforces that the consumer should always look at the Total Effective Cost (CET) and take into account the interest charged on the installments. According to Jeff, buying tends to make more sense for those who drive a lot, intend to keep the same car for a few years or use the vehicle to generate income, such as app drivers.
In these cases, the value of the asset is better diluted over time, especially when the monthly mileage exceeds approximately 1,500 km.
The subscription, explains the expert, is basically a long-term rental, in which the customer chooses model and configurations and pays a monthly fee that usually varies from 2% to 4% of the car's value, with IPVA, insurance and maintenance included.
This option is usually advantageous for those who like to change their car every 1 or 2 years, especially in more expensive models, which depreciate a lot in the beginning, and for those who prefer to have predictability of expenses. Listen to the episode above.
