The cheapest new car today is around R$80,000 - and a lot of people online ask: is it better to buy a slightly equipped new car or a well-equipped used one? In this episode of the Guia g1 podcast, specialist Murilo Briganti, partner at Bright Consulting, explains that the answer depends on the buyer's profile and three fundamental pillars: origin, conservation and total cost of the vehicle.
Provenance means understanding where the car came from: usage history, number of owners, accident records and documentary regularity. Murilo reinforces that what's cheap can be expensive when there are pending issues - RENAVAM, chassis and engine are the vehicle's "CPF" - and that purchases with dubious documentation turn into a legal and financial headache.

Conservation and total cost are equally decisive. A basic 0 km brings predictability - warranty, scheduled inspections and fewer technical surprises - while a used vehicle may require an initial inspection, parts exchange and, sometimes, more expensive insurance. To compare, Murilo recommends designing a cycle of 2 to 3 years: add purchase price, fuel, IPVA, insurance, maintenance and depreciation to see which option is more in line with your budget.
There are warning signs that should make a purchase unfeasible: confusing ownership history, mileage incompatible with wear, recent painting and welding, and the seller's resistance to showing documents. Murilo advises that those who do not have technical knowledge should prefer to buy from resellers or dealerships that offer legal support; Those who accept the risk and follow a rigorous checklist can save money by purchasing privately - as long as they hire a specialized inspection when necessary.
In the end, there is no universal answer: choose what fits your budget and your time in life. If you are looking for predictability and tranquility, a basic 0 km tends to be more appropriate; if you prioritize comfort and content, an equipped used car could be the solution - as long as the origin and conservation are proven.
