Fujimori resumes leadership over Sánchez in Peru; polls continue to be counted

With 98.21% of the votes counted, conservative Keiko Fujimori overtook the left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez and resumed the lead in the fierce dispute for the Presidency of Peru in the early hours of this Thursday (11).

Movement between candidates occurs as the counting of votes abroad progresses. With the change, Fujimori has 50,002% of the votes while Sánchez appears with 49,998%, according to ONPE (National Office of Electoral Processes) of Peru.

The difference in the number of votes remains tight: only 651 ballots separate the two candidates. Pre-election polls showed the two candidates in a technical tie.

Votes have been being counted since Sunday, when the second round was held, and the final result could still take weeks to be announced.

As shown by CNN, two of the main points that make it difficult to count votes in Peru are the way the election is carried out and the country's geography, with mountainous terrain and jungles.

Peru uses printed voting, which requires ballots to be sent to specific centers to be counted. It is often necessary to use a boat to reach places in jungle areas or travel with donkeys to areas without roads or trails.

Among the ballot boxes within Peru, 98,320% have already been counted. Abroad, 94.495% have been verified so far.
