Facing low temperatures in the early hours of the day brings additional challenges for drivers. Finding your car covered in a thick layer of white is a classic winter morning scene, and incorrectly removing this accumulated ice can cause irreversible damage and generate huge losses. Understanding the right way to clean the windshield ensures traffic safety and the integrity of the vehicle.
The formation of this frozen crust is a purely atmospheric phenomenon. Cláudio Santos, CEO of Blumo Mecânica Automotiva, explains how humidity reacts to the cold morning. "Frost forms when the temperature of the glass drops too much. The water vapor present in the air comes into contact with the cold glass and freezes", he explains. As the windshield is very exposed, it loses heat rapidly and reaches extreme temperatures quickly.
The danger of hot water and metallic objects
The morning rush leads many drivers to make the mistake of using boiling water. Attempting to instantly melt the ice tends to doom the piece.
"Pulling hot water on the windshield can cause a thermal shock, especially if the glass is very cold. This sudden variation in temperature causes immediate cracks and can completely shatter the structure. Ideally, the process should be gradual and controlled", explains the expert.
The use of improvised tools leads the ranking of accidents in garages. The expert condemns the use of household items in car maintenance.
"Drivers should avoid metallic objects, knives, improvised spatulas, screwdrivers and any abrasive item. These materials scratch the glass deeply and destroy the protective films. This type of attitude reduces general visibility and increases the chances of serious collisions", he warns.
Safe methods for defrosting glass
There are practical and recommended techniques that solve the problem without causing damage to the vehicle. The best approach uses the vehicle's own climate control technology.
"The safest method is to use a plastic scraper designed for glass or turn on the ventilation system with warm air", advises the specialist. This happens, according to Cláudio, because the air directed frontally raises the surface temperature from the inside out, melting the frost in complete safety.
For those who do not have a plastic scraper, water can be an ally, as long as it is at a controlled temperature, in a procedure that requires gentle application.
The expert suggests using water at room temperature with a soft cloth. The driver must slide the fabric lightly, always being careful not to force the frozen surface. Removal will happen naturally as the water breaks the ice's grip.
The risk to the wiper blades
Activating the metal rods before the frost has been completely removed causes instant mechanical damage. The intense cold seals the rubber directly against the glass.
"When the glass is frozen, the blades can get stuck to the windshield. Turning on the equipment in this situation forces the system's small electric motor, which can burn out when trying to move the parts blocked by the ice."
The physical resistance of ice exceeds the durability of flexible components. Incorrect activation bends the metal arm and tears off pieces of the rubber blade. "The correct thing to do is to first remove the frost and ensure that the blades are loose before turning on the wiper", explains the expert. The driver should never start driving without completely clearing all fields of vision of the car.
How to prevent frost the night before
Prevention saves a lot of time and effort on the coldest mornings. A little skincare routine before bed prevents the crust from forming.
"Some simple precautions help a lot, such as parking the vehicle in a covered place, using protective covers on the windshield and slightly lifting the wiper blades", says Cláudio.
The chemical industry offers efficient solutions for drivers in more rigorous regions. The technology creates an invisible barrier that repels freezing particles. "There are antifreeze and water repellent products developed for glass. They help reduce the adhesion of frost and facilitate removal", points out the CEO. Keeping the wiper reservoir always filled with the appropriate additive also prevents the internal hoses from freezing, according to the expert.
Beyond the windshield: pay attention to the rest of the vehicle
Extreme cold does not exclusively attack the car's front glass. The entire electrical and mechanical set undergoes drastic behavioral changes during the night. Cláudio recommends a quick inspection around the car before departure. "In addition to the windshield, it is important to check side windows, mirrors, headlights, lights and locks, which can also freeze", warns the mechanics expert.
Energy performance and dynamic stability also require close observation in the winter months. Essential components lose efficiency without proper heating. "The battery suffers more on cold days, as electrical performance tends to decrease", concludes Cláudio.
