Former French teammates reunite in Spain vs Cape Verde
The match between Spain and Cape Verde, in the first round of the group stage of the World Cup, will mark the reunion of two players who played for the French national team's youth teams.
Aymeric Laporte, from Spain, and Steven Moreira, from Cape Verde, played for the Bleus under-19 and under-21 teams between 2013 and 2015, before becoming naturalized and playing for the current teams.
Laporte, revealed by Athletic Bilbao, became a naturalized Spanish citizen in 2021 and started to defend the national team after not receiving opportunities in the French main team. Stiven, on the other hand, chose to defend Cape Verde, his mother's home country, in 2023.
In an interview with FIFA, the Cape Verdean player revealed that he had spoken to Laporte about the duel between the teams and said that the meeting would be "fun".
"I spoke to him, yes! We talked about this game. I hope we can talk about the great memories we have of the French team. Now playing in a World Cup against each other will be fun", he revealed.
