Former Corinthians defender says that defender revealed by the club is among the best in the world

After a cycle full of ups and downs since the 2022 World Cup, the Brazilian team arrived in the United States to compete in the current edition of the World Cup and started with a 1-1 draw with Morocco. Despite being a standout at Nottingham Forest, in England, and having been called up at other times, defender Murillo, revealed by Corinthians, was not remembered by Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti in any of his squad calls for Amarelinha.
However, for Leandro Castán, champion defender of the Brasileirão (2011) and Copa Libertadores (2012) with Timão, Filho do Terrão is one of the best in his position in world football and could have been remembered in the final list. Still, the former player pointed out that Brazil is well served with defenders in this edition of the main competition in the world of football.

"I believe that Marquinhos and Gabriel are doing very well, our national team's defense is very well served. Of those who were called up, I believe they are themselves. But I also believe that there were some who were not called up, who also did a great job, which is Beraldo, from PSG, and Murilo too, who for me is one of the best defenders in the world today. So, I believe that our defense is well served, it is in good hands. And I believe that the defense, when it comes to of defenders, is what Brazilians are least worried about.", said Castán in an interview with Gazeta Esportiva.
Without Murillo among those selected, Carlo Ancelotti's call-up included another defender revealed by Corinthians: Marquinhos, two-time Champions League champion and captain of Paris Saint-Germain, from France. His partner in Brazil's starting defense is Gabriel Magalhães, who plays for Arsenal, in England, and always declares his support for Timão even without having played for the club. In addition to them, Léo Pereira, from Flamengo, Bremer, from Juventus and Ibañez, from Al-Ahli, from Saudi Arabia, were also called up, but who has been playing on the right flank.
The defender revealed by Corinthians' youth teams has already played 114 games with the Nottingham Forest shirt and is increasingly consolidating himself as one of the Premier League's highlights. The player has even been identified as a target by European giants such as Real Madrid, from Spain, Liverpool and Manchester United, from England, according to the Old Continent press.
In March, in fact, the English portal TEAMTalk pointed out that Liverpool would be willing to pay around 80 million euros (R$475.2 million at current prices) to take Murillo from Nottingham in the current European transfer window, which began on June 15th.
If the transfer is completed at the speculated values, Corinthians could obtain a significant amount thanks to the clause that guarantees 10% of the negotiation profit. In this scenario, the percentage is calculated on the difference between the amount paid by Nottingham Forest when purchasing the defender and the amount raised in a possible sale.
As the English club spent around 12 million euros to sign Murillo from Timão, a deal worth around 80 million euros would generate a profit of approximately 68 million. Thus, Corinthians would be entitled to around 6.8 million euros, a value that corresponds to approximately R$40.3 million at the current price.
In addition to this revenue, the black and white club can also benefit from FIFA's solidarity mechanism, aimed at the teams responsible for training the athlete. However, there is a factor that could interfere with this transfer: Murillo will turn 24 in July and, if the transfer is made official after that date, Corinthians runs the risk of not receiving this compensation.
The possibility of a million-dollar sale gains even more relevance given the financial goals set by Corinthians for the season. In the budget approved by the Deliberative Council for 2026, the club established the expectation of raising R$151 million from athlete negotiations, including amounts from transfers and FIFA's solidarity mechanism.
Graduated in the club's youth categories, Murillo debuted among the professionals in April 2023, in a match against Remo, valid for the Copa do Brasil. The defender quickly gained space in the main team and ended his time at Timão with 27 matches played.
A few months later, in August 2023, he was negotiated with Nottingham Forest for 12 million euros, around R$64.4 million at the exchange rate at the time, corresponding to 70% of his economic rights. Interestingly, the amount that Corinthians could receive now, through the profit clause in a future sale, is similar to the amount obtained when the defender left the club.
